The Single Metric That Survives Every Filter I Run
If you pulled my live-betting laptop open right now, the second tab after the live odds page would be the PGA Tour’s Strokes Gained: Approach leaderboard. The metric drives more of my actual filtering decisions than any other statistic, and the reason is empirical rather than ideological: across seven years of notes, the players who consistently top SG: Approach are the players whose live-betting prices most consistently fail to capture their true implied probabilities of finishing inside the top 10.

Scottie Scheffler led the 2025 PGA Tour in SG: Approach, SG: Tee-to-Green, and Greens in Regulation, with a birdie-or-better rate of 25.78 per cent. Those numbers together explain why his outright prices through 2025 were rarely available at value above +400 at any major. The SG: Approach number specifically is the leading indicator — when a player gains 0.7+ strokes per round against the field on their second shots, they hit more greens, set up more birdie putts, and post lower scores. The maths is not subtle.
What follows is what SG: Approach actually measures, why the live version of the metric differs from the trailing version, how to weight the metric for specific courses, and how I build a live shortlist using SG: Approach as the first filter.
What SG: Approach Actually Measures
Strokes Gained: Approach measures how many strokes a player gains or loses against the field average on their approach shots — defined as any shot from outside 30 yards of the green that is not the tee shot on a par-4 or par-5. The reference is the field average distance-to-hole after the approach shot, compared to the player’s actual distance-to-hole. A player consistently leaving the ball closer to the hole than the field average from a given starting distance gains positive strokes against the field.
The metric is computed shot-by-shot using the PGA Tour’s ShotLink system, which tracks every shot at every tour event with laser-measured distance and lie data. The strokes-gained per shot are then summed across each round, and the season-long SG: Approach is computed as the per-round average across all rounds played by a player at official tour events.

The tour-average baseline for SG: Approach is by definition 0.000 strokes per round across the field. The top of the leaderboard typically runs +0.8 to +1.2 strokes per round in a strong season; the bottom runs -0.5 to -0.8 strokes per round. The variance between an elite SG: Approach player and a tour-average player is roughly 1.0 stroke per round — meaning the elite approach-player is gaining about 4 strokes per tournament over four rounds against an average opponent on approach play alone.
SG: Approach has the strongest individual correlation with on-course winning probability of any individual statistical metric the tour publishes. Higher than driving distance, higher than putting average, higher than scrambling percentage. The reason is that approach play sets up every birdie chance — if your second shot finishes 18 feet from the hole instead of 35 feet, the cumulative effect across a round is several strokes of difference in expected scoring.
Live SG: Approach vs Trailing SG: Approach
The PGA Tour publishes SG: Approach as both a current-event “live” figure and as a trailing season-long figure. The live version updates after every shot at an active tournament; the trailing version is the season-long average across all completed events.

Why is trailing-13-event SG: Approach often more predictive than season-long? Because the most recent 13 events capture the player’s current form state more accurately than a 25-event average that includes data from January for an August event. Approach play deteriorates and improves in cycles — injuries, equipment changes, technique adjustments, mental-game variations all affect the metric over weeks rather than years. A player who averaged +0.4 SG: Approach over the full season but has been at +1.1 over the past 13 events is in much better current form than the season-long number suggests.
The trading desks at most operators weight trailing-event SG: Approach more heavily than season-long in their live pricing models, with the typical weighting being 60-70 per cent on trailing-13-event and 30-40 per cent on season-long. The implication for punters is that working off public-facing season-long stats systematically underweights recent-form players and overweights established names whose recent form has slipped.
How often is SG: Approach updated within a live tournament? After every completed shot in real time on the official PGA Tour data feeds, with the displayed leaderboards typically lagging by 60-90 seconds. The trading desks ingest the shot-level data directly, which is why the live prices update before the public-facing SG: Approach leaderboards do.
Course-Specific Weighting
SG: Approach is not equally important at every course. Some venues reward approach play more than others, and the live trading models adjust their SG: Approach weighting accordingly.
Courses that reward SG: Approach heavily: Augusta (the par-5 reachability rewards precise long-iron play), East Lake (the firm greens demand controlled second shots), Pebble Beach (the small greens punish any approach miss), Olympic Club (similar small-green dynamics), and most US Open setups regardless of host venue. At these courses, the live trading models weight SG: Approach at 1.4-1.6 times the baseline.
Courses that reward SG: Approach less heavily: Pebble distance-dominant venues like Erin Hills, where SG: Off-the-Tee carries more weight; Quail Hollow, where distance matters substantially; TPC Sawgrass, where short-game and putting carry comparable weight to approach. At these courses, the live trading models weight SG: Approach at 0.8-1.0 times the baseline.
The course-specific weighting interacts with driving distance norms. The 2025 PGA Tour driving-distance average sat at 303-304 yards, with leaders pushing 327+ and the tour average growing 5-7 yards per year. At distance-rewarding courses, the elite distance hitters’ Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee plays a larger role than at approach-heavy venues, and the SG: Approach hierarchy shifts accordingly. The public-facing leaderboard does not always reflect these adjustments, which is where the disciplined punter can find pricing inefficiencies.

Building a Live Shortlist Using SG: Approach
The workflow I use to build a shortlist for any live golf event starts with the SG: Approach leaderboard, filtered to the field. The process takes about 25 minutes for a major and 10 minutes for a regular tour event.

Step one: pull the trailing-13-event SG: Approach numbers for every player in the field. Players ranked in the top 20 are the initial shortlist; the bottom 40 are excluded entirely unless there is a clear course-specific factor that overrides the recent form signal.
Step two: weight the SG: Approach numbers by the course-specific factor. Augusta gets 1.5×, US Open gets 1.4×, regular tour parkland gets 1.0×, distance-heavy venues get 0.85×.
Step three: cross-reference against course form. Course form fits SG: Approach into venue history — a player with elite SG: Approach who has historically struggled at the specific venue gets weighted down 20-30 per cent in my model. A player with elite SG: Approach who has historically thrived at the venue stays in the top tier of the shortlist.
Step four: take the top 8-10 names from the weighted shortlist and check their live prices against my probability estimates. The names whose live prices imply probabilities 5-10 per cent below my probability estimates are the actionable shortlist for that event.
The shortlist size of 8-10 is deliberate. Three or four names is too few to absorb tournament variance; 15-20 names is too many to research properly during a four-hour live window. Eight to ten lets me follow each player closely enough to make timely decisions and broad enough to spread variance.
